How to choose the right coolant and why I need coolant service?

How to choose the right coolant and why I need coolant service?

First of all, we need to answer the question what is the coolant? For while they often go by different names, antifreeze and engine coolant are the same thing. They should really be called “engine regulant” or something official-sounding like that because their job is twofold: to stop engines getting too hot in the summer, and to stop them getting too cold in the winter.

Increasing the water’s boiling point also decreases the point at which it freezes because it develops a greater capacity for taking on and transferring heat. The idea here is to make sure that the coolant stays in its liquid form – because if it freezes it’ll expand (breaking any rigid mechanics in the pump).

Let’s get to the business and find out why coolant has so many types and different colors. Originally, the different colors of antifreeze were intended to make clear which particular type of antifreeze was currently in the vehicle. That’s because, due to the different chemical make-ups of different antifreeze mixtures, mixing different ones is likely to cause unwanted chemical reactions between the two and it’s likely to become a thicker mixture that’s more likely to clog up your cooling system.

Your car’s owner’s manual provides a wealth of information. It will tell you what type of coolant is best to use in your vehicle. If you don’t have a copy of your owner’s manual, you can most likely find the information you need online. The formulas suggested at your dealership and your owner manual will probably be original equipment manufacturer (OEM) approved, but there are likely aftermarket equivalents to choose from as well.

If you were mixing different types of coolants, unsure if you put the right one, or your car is over 100 thousand miles and your car’s coolant system never been serviced, coolant flush will be the best solution. It also benefits you in multiple aspects which are listed below:

  1. Coolant flushes remove rust and scale deposits, which build up over time. It’s important to get rid of these deposits because they can cause overheating and damage your entire cooling system.
  2. Over time, the old anti-freeze loses its anti-corrosive properties, which allows for contaminants to build up in the cooling system. The new anti-freeze contains additives that work to lubricate your automobile’s water pump, which can help extend the life of your water pump.
  3. When you get a coolant flush, it is also common to receive an inspection of your entire cooling system including the thermostat, radiator and all hoses and belts. This is beneficial because it checks for leaks and other potential problems.

Make sure you keep track of your miles and your time. Proactive maintenance means a happier car, a happier driver and a happier wallet. See you for your coolant service in ABC Auto Repair!
